How do I keep my hair colour from fading? Itso explains

I am Itso, a hair stylist and colour specialist here, and the question I hear most from my colour clients is: how do I keep my hair colour from fading between salon visits? Here is my honest answer.

Every wash lifts a little colour, and hot water lifts more. Sunshine, heat styling and chlorine all fade it faster. This does not mean your colour was done badly. It is simply how coloured hair behaves, and there is a lot you can do at home to keep it bright.

Here is what I, Itso, always advise. People often ask how often they should wash coloured hair - my answer is two or three times a week, with lukewarm water rather than hot. Choose a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo made for coloured hair, because a harsh shampoo strips colour out early. Always use a heat protectant before styling, and in strong sun wear a hat or use a product with UV protection.

At the salon, to keep coloured hair soft and glossy between visits, we use the George Vallossian Repair Hair Mask. It is a leave-in mask you put on towel-dried hair, made to nourish and repair, and the product page lists heat and UV protection among its aims.

When you come in, we look at your hair first and tell you honestly what it needs. We colour hair at both salons, 16 Beauchamp Place and Jumeirah Hotel.
